The Northeastern Pennsylvania Area Labor Federation helped to organize a rally last night in Yatesville – along with US Representative Matt Cartwright – to shine a light on the impact of sequester cuts on middle class families.
The ‘Stop the Sequester for Working Families’ rally attracted over 200 union members to the gymnasium at Pittston Area High School.
Among the impacts highlighted were layoffs and furloughs at Tobyhanna Army Depot, one of the region’s largest employers; the sequester also will cut funding that is used to provide job training to veterans, along with cuts to education, domestic violence shelters, and nearly every other federally-supported program.
Frank Snyder, Secretary Treasurer of the Pennsylvania AFL-CIO addressed the attendees to discuss the human side of this terrible policy. “It’s a high-stakes game of chicken, make no mistake about it, and they’re playing with real people. Who is going to be affected? People you know, your friends and families.”
The sequester imposed arbitrary across-the-board cuts with no concern for the importance or impact of any particular program. Call or write your representatives in Congress, and tell them to REPEAL the sequester now!
