BLOG_WORKERSMEMORIALDAY2016Workers’ Memorial Day is an important symbol of our ongoing fight for safe workplaces, so that every worker can go to work and return home safe and healthy at the end of the day.  Every April 28th, unions and community organizations, workers and central labor bodies hold events to remember those who have died, and to renew our conviction to continue the fight for workers.  If you are aware of an event in  PA that is not listed below, please forward the information to info@paaflcio.org

PHILADELPHIA

Philadelphia Council AFL-CIO and the Philadelphia Area Project on Occupational Safety and Health, (PhilaPOSH), 28th Annual Workers’ Memorial Day Breakfast and Memorial Service
DATE/TIME: Friday, April 29, 2016, Registration at 8:30 AM, Breakfast at 9:00 AM
PLACE: Sheet Metal Workers Hall, 1301 S. Columbus Blvd, Philadelphia, PA 19147
EVENT: Prayer offering, brief speakers program, procession to Penn’s Landing, families of deceased and injured workers invited, casting of flowers into the Delaware River. Brian Wydlitz – Bagpipes.
ADMISSION: $60.00 per person; $600.00 for tables of ten.

Lehigh Valley Labor Council Workers’ Memorial Observance – 25th Anniversary

EVENT: Names of deceased workers read as bell tolls after each name.

Greater Wilkes-Barre Central Labor Council Workers’ Memorial Day Observance

PLACE: UFCW 1776 Building, State Route 309, Pittston, PA
EVENT: Brief program prior to Labor Council meeting, including lighting of candles and remarks honoring deceased and injured workers.

Schulykill County Central Labor Council, AFL-CIO Workers’ Memorial Day Observance
DATE/TIME: Saturday April 30, 2016 at 10:00 AM
PLACE: Coal Miner Statue – 1565 Bunting St, Pottsville, PA 17901 (at the corner of Route 901 & 209 in front of the Turkey Hill)

CENTRAL PENNSYLVANIA

Harrisburg Region Central Labor Council Workers’ Memorial Day Breakfast and Memorial Observance
DATE/TIME: Thursday April 28, 2016 at 8:30 AM
WHERE: Passage to India restaurant, 525 S. Front St., Harrisburg, PA
EVENT: Breakfast is $15 at the door. The memorial observance will be held following the breakfast at the Monument in Labor’s Grove which is a very short walk from the restaurant.

York-Adams Central Labor Council 26th Annual Workers’ Memorial Day Observance
DATE/TIME: Tuesday, April 28, 2015 at 6:00 PM
PLACE: Kiwanis Lake in York, PA
EVENT: Memorial ceremony with color guard, speakers program, candle lighting tribute, placing of memorial wreath on the lake and the playing of Taps

Greater Johnstown Regional Central Labor Council 26th Annual Workers’ Memorial Banquet
DATE/TIME: Friday, May 6, 2016 at 6:00 PM
PLACE: Christ the Savior Educational Center, 300 Garfield St., Johnstown, PA 15906
EVENT: Memorial Banquet and scholarship awards announced.

NORTHWEST PENNSYLVANIA

Mercer County Central Labor Council, AFL-CIO Workers’ Memorial Observance
DATE/TIME: Thursday, April 28, 2016 at 12:00 Noon
PLACE: Mercer County Courthouse Rotunda, Mercer, PA
EVENT: Observance includes brief speakers program, reading of names of deceased workers and tolling of bells. Observance is held at noontime and attracts many workers from the courthouse and nearby workplaces.

Erie-Crawford Central Labor Council, AFL-CIO 29th Annual Workers’ Memorial Service
DATE/TIME: Thursday, April 28, 2016 from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM
PLACE: Erie City Council Chambers, City Council Chambers, City Hall, 626 State St., Erie, PA 16501
EVENT: Prayer service, speaker program, reading of names and placing of memorial wreath at the Workers’ Monument in Perry Square.

Venango County Central Labor Council, AFL-CIO / AFSCME 1050 Workers’ Memorial Service

PLACE: Workers Memorial Monument on the Polk Center grounds, Polk, PA
EVENT: Event is to remember those who gave the ultimate sacrifice and renew our pledge for continue the fight for workplace safety at all worksites.

SOUTHWEST PENNSYLVANIA

Unions of the Allegheny County Central Labor Council Workers’ Memorial Day Observance
DATE/TIME: Thursday, April 28, 2016 at 12:00 Noon
PLACE: Market Square, downtown Pittsburgh
EVENT: This year’s ceremony will highlight OSHA’s Focus Four Hazards. Join Jack Shea, President of the Allegheny-Fayette Labor Council; James T. Kunz Jr., Business Manager of IUOE Local 66; and keynote speaker Christopher Robinson, Director of the Pittsburgh Office of OSHA.
