On Saturday, May 12 the National Association of Letter Carriers along with partners across the Labor movement and our communities will hold the 26th annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive. Last year’s event brought in more than 71 million pounds of non-perishable food that was collected and delivered to community food banks, pantries, and shelters, providing families in need with basic nutrition.
“Letter carriers witness daily the desperation of patrons who are suffering and they always respond,” he wrote. “It is definitely the most demanding day of the year for all carriers.”
Letter Carriers across Pennsylvania and around the country are serving their neighbors through this incredible act of community service. All donations stay local. Participating in the food drive is simple: just set out your non-perishable food well before your letter carrier’s normal pick-up time. (A good rule of thumb is to have your bags by the mailbox by 9:00 AM.)
The most requested, non-perishable food items include: cereal, pasta, pasta sauce or spaghetti sauce, rice, canned fruits and vegetables, canned meals (such as soups, chili and pasta), 100% juice, peanut butter, macaroni & cheese, canned protein (tuna, chicken and turkey), beans (canned or dry). You also can donate healthy, low-sodium, low-sugar items such as beans, oatmeal and other whole grains, and canola or olive oil.
You can go a step further and support fellow union members, by choosing union-made brands like Betty Crocker, Campbell’s Soup, Chef Boyardee, Hamburger Helper, Old El Paso, Prego, Domino, Bisquick, General Mills, Kellogg’s, Keebler, Quaker, and Kraft.
