This week, the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers District Lodge 142 met in Pittsburgh, PA for their biennial convention. Air transport workers from across the country came together with their brothers and sisters, representing airlines from Southwest to Alaska Air, American Airlines and so many more.
The IAMAW is the number one organizing union in the AFL-CIO nationally. Their market share has grown significantly over the recent years, even though, in the air transport sector, they face a litany of labor law attacks and bargaining fights. Our Secretary-Treasurer Frank Snyder issued a call for action on the ‘Protecting the Right to Organize’ Act (PROact) to the delegation. We build. We fly. We service. This is your time. Your moment. This is your union! Only in a union will we win back workers’ place at the bargaining table.
Our brothers at the Pittsburgh International Airport, IAMAW Local 1976 president Mike Stoica and Mike Cicconi presented General Vice President Sito Pantoja and the delegates with a gift of the Union’s seal to mark the occasion. International President Robert Martinez and Congressman Conor Lamb also addressed the convention.
The solidarity the IAMAW members pledge to their community is truly impressive. While at their Biennial Convention, these union sisters and brothers raised more than $2,000 in 15 minutes for Guide Dogs of America. The union played a founding role in the organization and to this day fundraises for more than 50% of the budget. A guide dog graduate, Walter and his human Gary gave a heartfelt thank you to the union members for their support. This is one of the best examples of community service in our movement. Thank you IAMAW District Lodge 142!
