Pennsylvania AFL-CIO Sends Letter to Governor Wolf Calling for Worker Safety Protections

(HARRISBURG) The Pennsylvania AFL-CIO sent a letter to Governor Tom Wolf, on behalf of the more than 700,000 union members across the Commonwealth, calling for action on COVID-19: “Dear Governor Wolf: People across Pennsylvania are seeing their everyday lives impacted by our Nation’s public health crisis.  In the past week we have seen policy measures enacted to protect public health from the spread of COVID-19.  All working people have a part to play in fighting the COVID-19 pandemic, and workers’ rights must be treated as primary concerns with concrete solutions, not with inadequate, short-term gestures. Today in Labor History: Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire

108 years ago today, one of the deadliest industrial disasters shook the New York City garment factory and workers across the country.  146 workers, mostly young women and immigrants were killed when a fire rapidly spread through the factory, another 71 more were injured.  Less two years earlier, 15,000 workers in the New York garment industry walked out on November 24th in a general strike that would last until February 1910.
