PA AFL-CIO PRESS RELEASE

July 8, 2004

Union Members to Deliver Show Us The Jobs Message During President Bush’s York Visit

York, PA - As George Bush prepares to visit York this Friday, July 9th, residents of Central Pennsylvania have a clear message to send him: The Bush-Cheney Administration has left the people of Central Pennsylvania behind. Workers will meet at the Delco Plaza at 4:00pm and march to the York Expo Center carrying signs delivering a jobs message to President Bush.

The Bush-Cheney Administration has supported and encouraged corporations to send good jobs overseas and has given tax breaks to the rich at the expense of working people.  We have seen too many quality jobs disappear and be replaced by low-wage, Wal-Mart type jobs. Average hourly wages are at their lowest levels in two years, and long-term unemployment is at its highest rate in 20 years. The working men and women of Pennsylvania need jobs that can support a family and sustain our country’s middle class.

Several workers who lost good jobs or cannot find good jobs will be available for interviews with the media. Terry Orndorff, former Bargaining Chairman for the United Autoworkers Local 786 Caterpillar, is available for interviews by phoning him at (717) 637-4635.  Richard Leber, a former Caterpillar worker and member of the United Autoworkers Local 786 will be available for interviews at the rally. He can also be reached by phone at (717) 428-3086.  Other workers will also be available for interviews with the media

Pennsylvanians need good jobs with health care benefits to support their families, in addition to wages that allow them to pay for basic necessities.  With food and energy prices rising at exorbitant rates, workers are scrambling to make ends meet.  We need leaders who will work to change the economic climate, and fight for the working people of Pennsylvania.

* Note there will be excellent visual opportunities for still and video photographers.
