Wednesday October 4, 2006

Bob Casey, Jr. and PA Congressional Candidates will Join Hundreds of Union Volunteers in Door To Door Canvassing In Pennsylvania On Saturday, October 7, 2006

Opening of Final Stretch of Mobilization of Union Voters in Pennsylvania for November

Bob Casey Jr., endorsed by the Pennsylvania AFL-CIO for U.S. Senate, will lead the kick-off of a massive statewide door to door canvassing of union households on Saturday, morning, October 7, 2006 in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania as part of a nationwide and statewide Labor 2006 National Walk Day to “Take Back Congress”.

Casey will join union member volunteers at 9:00 A.M. at the International Union of Operating Engineers, (IUOE), Local 542, located at 501 East Mail Street and will lead the canvassing of union households in the Wilkes-Barre area, (see attached list of labor walks and contacts).

Pennsylvania AFL-CIO endorsed congressional candidates: Jason Altmire (CD-4); Lois Murphy, (CD-6); Joe Sestak, (CD-7); Charles Dertinger, (CD-15); Rep. Tim Holden, (CD-17) and Rep. Mike Doyle, (CD-14) will also be leading walks in union locations in Pennsylvania. Several regional and statewide labor leaders will join the Congressional candidates in kicking-off the walks which will begin simultaneously at 9:00 A.M. from their respective locations.

National Walk Day opens the final stretch of the mid-term elections and the final phase of the Pennsylvania AFL-CIO 2006 mobilization of union workers and union households. Key issues to be discussed during the walks include jobs, minimum wage, health care, retirement security and freedom to form unions.

Since July 2006, approximately a million leaflets have been handed to union workers and union households in Pennsylvania. Union households are expected to represent one out of three voters in November, as they did in the 2004 Presidential election.

The AFL-CIO is engaged in 21 governor’s races, 15 Senate races and more than 50 House races across the nation.
