Resolution No. 26

HEALTH AND SAFETY

WHEREAS, Over 80,000 Pennsylvania workers are injured on the job each year; and

Occupational Disease is notoriously undetected and no law requires monitoring or treatment for toxic chemicals except in rare cases; and

Employers can receive a 5% premium discount on their Workers’ Compensation costs for setting up a health and safety committee; and

”Operating” Health and Safety Committees are the best practice for reducing accidents and injuries in the workplace; and

Only 3,000 employers, out of over 250,000, have set up Health and Safety Committees and receive the 5% insurance premium reduction.

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That the Pennsylvania AFL-CIO work to strengthen the Department of Labor and Industry’s Workplace Safety Committee Program and support State and Federal legislation to compensate victims of occupational diseases.

The 2006 Convention

Planning is now underway for the 2006 Convention
