2004 Convention Resolutions
Resolution No. 27
MEDICARE PRESCRIPTION DRUG BENEFIT
WHEREAS, Medicare is the safety net for all seniors, providing income replacement and health care coverage; and
The Medicare health care coverage did not include coverage for prescription drugs; and
The Republican Congress and President passed a “drug” benefit for Medicare that is wholly inadequate; and
The Medicare prescription benefit will not benefit the vast majority of Medicare beneficiaries, but will benefit the drug companies; and
The prescription benefit actually protects drug manufacturers from being subject to cost/volume discounts; and
The cost of prescription drugs has eroded the value of Social Security.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That the Pennsylvania AFL-CIO, and it’s affiliates, educate their members about the phony prescription drug benefit and advocate for full coverage for prescription drugs.
