2004 Convention Resolutions

Resolution No. 56

AMERICAN PARITY ACT

WHEREAS, The Bush Administration has committed 87 billion dollars of taxpayers’ money for Iraq and of that 66.7 billion is for military operations and 20.3 billion is for Iraq's reconstruction, and

This money will be used for education, health care and infrastructure improvements in Iraq, and

If an equal amount of taxpayer dollars was reinvested in the United States, Pennsylvania's share would be 909.7 million dollars, and

That money could be used to hire 29,612 new teachers, put 131,189 children through Headstart, pay the college tuition for 222,902 students or pay the out-of-pocket drug bills for 910,575 Medicare beneficiaries, and

There is a Bill in the U.S. Congress called The American Parity Act that would require an amount equal to the money dedicated for Iraqi reconstruction be taken from the tax cuts given to America's wealthiest 1% and used to address the needs of America's Working Families.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, That the Pennsylvania AFL-CIO support the American Parity Act, and

THEREFORE, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the Pennsylvania AFL-CIO, and all it’s affiliates, urge the Pennsylvania Congressional Delegation in the strongest terms to sponsor and vote for The American Parity Act.
