On Tuesday, August 6, United States Senator and longtime worker advocate Bob Casey met with union members at the AFSCME Conference Center in Harrisburg, PA. Union activists and the senator discussed the issues impacting working people and their families across the Commonwealth.
Senator Casey made clear his dedication to defending workers in Washington, while anti-worker corporate interests and right-wing extremism permeate public policy and politics. Among the topics of high importance were healthcare, the impact of the GOP tax reform, and protecting the right to organize.
The 2017 GOP Tax Scam undermined working people, in favor of giving large handouts to corporations and the super-rich. Senator Casey introduced the Tax Fairness for Workers Act, which will not only reinstate the deduction for unreimbursed employee expenses, but will make the deduction for union dues above the line, making it available to everyone, not just those who itemize. This legislation, S.1026, is endorsed by the AFL-CIO.
The Senator also remarked on the extraordinary attacks on Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act. The White House is proposing a $1.5 trillion cut to Medicaid over the next 10 years. 38% of Pennsylvania children benefit from Medicaid. The right-wing has consistently weakened the ACA through lawsuits, past and present, and the sabotaging of the state health insurance exchanges.
In closing, Senator Casey made clear his passionate support for the PRO Act, Protecting the Right to Organize. This legislation is the most significant advancement for workers’ rights and the ability to join together in a union, in decades.
Thank you for joining us in the House of Labor, Senator Casey!
